Gem of the Day: The future belongs to those
who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

Dear Small Pawsers,
Welcome to the newest members of our online
mailing list! We are so happy to have you
join us!
This may look as if it is coming only to
you but really it is going out to fellow
Small Pawsers all across our country and
in several foreign countries as well. Adoption
information is posted below!
First of all if you did not receive the last
newsletter that we sent out, here it is.
http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/april19.html
(Please note that you may receive each of
our newsletters twice. It's the only way
we can assure that both AOL and MSN users
will receive it at least once. Thank you
in advance for your understanding!)
Ok, good news! We think that our problem
with AOL and MSN treating us as SPAM, may be over! I am going
to send this mailing out twice as a final
"test", and if none of you report
that you have only gotten it once, I think
the problem may be over and we can stop sending
the newsletters out twice.:) Hallelujah and
thank you so much for your patience! You
guys have been wonderful about this!
Ok, we have a lot to report back to you about
and we also have something we need your opinion
about, as well. It is an important decision
and there will be more about it below.
First, here are our newest auction rescue
pictures! YOU guys did this. You should be
very proud that you were able to save these
precious Bichons from a further life of mere
existence in a commercial kennel! Turn up
your speakers, we have music for you!
These are the four ADORABLE Bichon puppies
(and one previously doomed Beagle) that our
Vice-President, Susan Sebring rescued!
http://members.cox.net/smallpaws/AprilDay/
These are the 14 adults that our auction
rescue team rescued from Wheaton, Missouri.
http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/pup3/easterauction.html
As you know, we went way over our budget
($3200.00 over and ouch) to be able to save
three pregnant Bichons. The three females
came up together and the high bidder got
their choice of one, two, or all three. If
our auction team had not taken all three,
the backup bidder would have been offered
what was left at the same price.
One of the Bichons appeared to be very pregnant
to our auction rescue team, and they felt
she was in danger to leave her, so they got
the three pregnant moms out and high-tailed
it out of there.
I wrote to you on Saturday to let you know
that because we got four MORE Bichon puppies
from a second commercial kennel auction,
and also because we got three pregnant Bichons,
we went over budget by $3200.00 and that
we needed immediate help.
We paid $1075.00 for each of these three
pregnant Bichons. Let me explain to you guys
why that is.
The brokers are now paying $400.00 a piece
for Bichon puppies, when they DO get orders
for them. (Supply and demand...the less there
is of anything, the more it costs to buy
it)
If a pregnant Bichon has five puppies, the
buying breeder has made $2000.00 already.
That's why the obviously pregnant dogs are
more expensive at auction.
I want to thank each one of you who answered
this call for emergency help. We are still
over $700.00 in the hole after this auction,
so if any of you can help us to get up to
ground level, we would sure appreciate it.
We desperately need to replenish this money
from our general fund as we have vet bills
out the roof due to the LAST bunch of babies
we rescued.
If you can help with this emergency situation
this is how you may do that, securely, online.

I also want to thank you all for sending
your letters of support. Not ONE of you was
mad that we went over budget and got these
three preggers girls out of there. You said
you would have been mad if we DIDN'T get
them out of there. Thank you so much for
your love and support in this situation.
I also want to thank those of you who left
supportive and loving messages on my home
phone voice mail. You will never know how
much these meant this past weekend. Thank
you all so very much. Some of your messages
moved me to tears and I called and let our
auction rescue team hear your words of support.
Well, I bet you guys are wanting to know
"if we gots any babies yet Miss Scarlett."
So far not yet, but it will be any day. We
have one little girl who is about to burst.
Bless her heart, she looks like she could
have 7 or 8 puppies and no I am not kidding.
Prepare yourself. She is NINE years old and
will be 10 in December.
Thanks to your love and support, this is
the LAST time that will be happening. Please pray for her.She just looks miserable.
ALSO, this makes mamy breeders that we have
put out of the Bichon business. The breeder
who sold these 14 Bichons on Saturday, is
out of the Bichon business. We are thinking
she may have kept the 15th Bichon, the one
that was pulled from the auction, as a personal
pet because these babies are really friendly.
You guys, I have some very important news
to share with you. I know when I first felt
that God was leading us to go get these Bichons
out of the commercial kennel auctions, it
seemed like an uphill battle with no end
in site. I found myself looking upwards and
asking, "Are Ya SUREEEE???"
Well, I have some very good news for you
guys. By removing over 1500 Bichons from
the commercial kennels of Missouri in the
past 4 and a 1/2 years, we ARE making a significant
dent in the Pet Shop population...Are you
ready? Do you want to see? I hope your hearts
are singing as loudly as mine is at this
wonderful news. We are hearing more and more
of these great stories.

Hi I just wanted to let you know, I was at
a pet shop the other day, I went
over to check out the puppies. They had 1
bichon, I asked how much he was,
she said $1100. So I asked about the prices
of all the other puppies, they
were $400-$600, so I asked why the bichon
was so much more, and she said
Well they are very hard to get now for some
reason, she added that they
recently swiched brokers and the previous
one couldn't get bichons at
all!!!!! It's working, now it's getting to
the point of where it's too
expensive for people to buy bichons, so now
I hope people realize that it's
cheaper and better to buy a well bred puppy
from a reputable breeder!!!!
I also asked if they were mill puppies. She
said that all the puppies were
from individual breeders "local"
to the broker. All of the puppies were from
Missouri or KY.
Thanks

And yet another story that tells me we are
hitting them hard...

Robin,
I told you that one of my neighbors works
for a Pet Shop that sells live animals :(...
She brought home a bichon that they could
not sell last year and nursed him back to
health and kept him and he is the love of
their life... I told her when she brought
him home I would take him into rescue and
she was considering it but the family fell
in love with him and would not let him go..
The pet shop owner gave him to her.. Well
about 3 months ago another little bichon
came in from the Hunte Corp and they were
talking about sending him back because of
his skin problem... She was going to bring
this one home and nurse him back to health
but she said they found a family to take
him...
Just Friday I was talking with her again
and I ask any more Bichons at your store
and she said." the owner is not buying
any more bichons for we can't get rid of
them"... Another pet shop not taking
in Bichons... Yippee...

I know many of you have similar stories.
Wow. $1100.00 for a Pet Shop Bichon that
came from a commercial kennel where it's
parents were not health tested and it's family
tree did NOT fork, if you get my drift. For
not much more you can get a GREAT Bichon
puppy from GREAT breeders who health test
their parents!
I hope you don't take this the wrong way,
but I hope that baby sit's there until he
is 9 months old. I bet it will be the last
time they ever order Bichons again. This
is the KEY. When Pet Shops STOP selling puppies,
the puppy mills will go out of business because
there would be no one to buy their wares.
Whenever one buys ANY puppy from a Pet Shop,
it HAD to come from a commercial kennel.
These are the only places that will sell
to pet shops!
Reputable breeders won't sell to someplace
that would sell their puppies to people they
don't even know.
Backyard breeders don't have enough quantity
to sell to Pet Shops. Pet Shops want to know
that they can buy in bulk.
Guess what? It appears they are having trouble
locating Bichons to buy and resell. I wonder
where they have all gone.....?:) LOOK IN
YOUR HOMES...THERE THEY ARE!
Ok. this brings me to a dilemna we have.
We are all exhausted but exhausted in a good
way because we know are change the course
of history here.
Bonnie Ferguson, at bonnie@smallpawsrescue.org, our executive assistant is working many
MANY hours a day, placing the puppies and
adults that we already have now.
Linda De Hart at BA DEHART@aol.com is working day and night getting airline
reservations for both puppies going to permanent
homes, and for adult dogs flying to foster
homes.
Yours truly has made three round trips to
the airport today alone, with five more rescues
flying out tomorrow.
The Real Scoop about Flying Dogs
Ok, here is our problem. We know of a breeder
who may be planning to take several Bichon
puppies to an upcoming commercial kennel
auction.
We know him and we may be able to strike
a deal with him before the auction date at
a price much lower than what we have been
paying at the auctions.
This deal would also INCLUDE getting his
female breeding stock.
If you guys want us to, we can make an offer
to buy these Bichons for below auction prices.
We think this is a good deal all around.
It would keep Bichons puppies from showing
up at the auctions and making the millers
thinking that Bichons are making a comeback.
We can't make this offer without money in
the bank in advance.
There are enough of us so that if everyone
could help a little, it would become a lot
and we could make this deal that could save
us thaousands of dollars and keep tens of
thousands of badly bred Bichons from going
back into the mills and showing up in rescue
later.
Let us know what you want us to do...ok?
We have to make this deal by the close of business
on Wednesday if we are going to do it.
Ok, that's all for now. These are our prayer
requests. Remember, prayer changes circumstances
and people! Love,Robin

I would like to be on any prayer lists that
absolutely believe that God heals and is
still in the miracle business. The devil
has been working on this for quite a while.
The lump on my leg has been examined many
times in the last year or so, and I have
always been told that it isn't a problem.
I have never had anyone tell me that there
was a problem, including the surgeon that
I saw in Dec. I was trying to wait until
Bob's back was better.
I have been diagnosed with a Hemangio Sarccoma
in my left leg (interestingly, more comon
in dogs that humans). I am trying to get
an appointment at MD Anderson, but that is
also proving to be a problem since, although
the surgery was over a week ago, the biopsy
is not yet completed to send to MDA, and
nothing can be done until they get it.
Please also pray for relief in Bob's back,
he has a degenerative condition, and some
disk problems.
One last prayer request is for our minds
and spirits. Please pray for us to stay focused
on our prayers and faith in God. Please pray
that we can resist the doubts and fears.
I thank everyone for positive, faith filled
prayers.

Robin & Lori,
Your team did the right thing in getting
ALL of those babies out. I will be praying
for the little mamas and their newborns!
I am also in need of some special prayers
right now too! I got some bad news Thursday.
Lady hasn't been wanting to eat, (which is
SO not like her...she LOVES to eat), so I
took her to the vet thinking that she might
have an abcessed tooth or something like
that. He did blood work and found that her
kidneys are failing. She turned 15 the end
of Feb. She came into our family 15 years
ago on Easter Sunday when we were "just
going to look". She is now not eating
anything not even eggs or cheese. She has
been vomiting alot. I have been giving her
pepcid hoping to get her stomach to where
she can try to eat, but it doesnt seem to
be helping. My heart is breaking for her.
This is going to be very hard. I dont want
her to miss one minute of her life that she
is supposed to live and at the same time
I don't want her to suffer for one second.
Please Pray for us, this is so hard, we love
her so much, and tomorrow we will have loved
her for 15 years. Leisa ~ >
P.S. If you are a new Small Pawser and are wanting
adoption information, these are the Bichons
we have for adoption right now on our Petfinder's
Page. Check in often as this page changes

And a bit more about adopting...
Remember, we save all of the puppies we get
into rescue for people who are grieving the
loss of a beloved pet or person in their
lives within the last 6 months.
The Ten Commandments (pet version)
1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen
years.
Any separation from you will he painful for
me.
Remember that before you adopt me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want
of me.
3. Place your trust in me-it's crucial to
my well-being.
4. Don't be angry at me for long and don't
lock me up
as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment
and your friends. I have only you.
5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't
understand your
words, I understand your voice when its speaking
to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll
never forget it.
7. Remember before you hit me that I have
teeth that
could easily crush the bones of your hand
but that I
choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative,
obstinate
or lazy, ask your self if something might
be bothering me.
Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, or
I've been out in
the sun too long, or my heart is getting
old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old; you, too,
will grow old.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never
say, "I can't
bear to watch it, or, "Let it happen
in my absence."
Everything is easier for me if you are there.
Remember, I love you.
Faith doesn't get you around trouble, it
gets you through it.
