Dear Small Pawsers,

Welcome to our newest members of our Small Paws® Rescue Online Newsletter, especially to those of you who have seen us on Fox and Friends in New York City, or on Animal Planet on "Dogs 101."

Welcome! We hope you enjoy reading about the Bichons and the people who love them!

If you missed our last newsletter, here it is.

Ok, right down to business. We need your help.

I hope that by now most of you know me well enough to know that we don't ask for help for these Bichons, if they don't need it.

I've tried to give you all a little break from fundraising, but now, oh man, do we ever need your help.

Dave Hagadorn tells me that if we mail all of our vet bills we will be in the red by about $7,000.00. We really do need your help just to get back up to zero, in the black, and a place where we can operate.

See Vet Bills Paid by Small Paws® Rescue in November of 2010 totalling $16, 997.38 for the first nine days of November, which is an average of $1,888.57 per day.

And then late last night we got this "Stop, Drop and Pray" request about one of our fosters in South Carolina, Sophie Rose. She is doing better this morning but was still at the ER as of about 7 A.M. We do not know what that charges will be yet.

<Subject: STOP DROP PRAY - SOPHIE ROSE IS IN TROUBLE!

From: landsharkinnc@suddenlink.net

Deb Martindale - Burnsville NC just phoned, on her way to E-clinic; Sophie Rose having seizure, won't stop;
From her vet records she was on meds years ago for 'a' seizure but no record of long term involvement and then the records sort of 'dropped off' and apparently the Pheno had not been given in years when we (SPR) got her.
She had Bladder surgery just about 2 weeks ago w/ no problem with pre-surg blood work up, and Deb's had her since Mid SEPTEMBER.>

And, these are just a few of the Bichons we have taken in recently, where they are, why we got them, and the estimate to get their vetting which is coming to $4175.02 for just these few Bichons, and yes, there are others.

These aren't Bichons with broken legs or heart murmurs. They are just the normal medical needs that we see coming in every day.

The problem is that when they are coming in by the dozens, $500.00-$600 each is enough to make a grown man sit up and scream like a girl.

My job is to tell you what we have coming in, and the costs involved, and that we need help in order to be able to help them. So here I am, " a tellin' ".

Here are just a few of the newbies to
Small Paws® Rescue and their vet estimates totalling .

From: pacess4@att.net

Here is a little guy we pulled from animal control today.

Kathy Macpherson and her husband went into Chicago to get him. They are a very high kill facility and put dogs down every day. Every white dog they get there is a "poodle" The new manager is very rescue friendly, so they are trying really hard to get more rescued, so their euth rates go down. A volunteer there told me unfortunately they euthanize dogs every day. They are the facility that gets in about 25,000-30,000 dogs per year.

We named him Sonny. He is estimated to be about 6 months old. Still has baby teeth. He will need neuter, quarantine and some vaccinations. The quarantine is $8 per day. Estimated cost $500.00

Will keep you updated,
Thanks,
Sara (IL and IN)

Subject: Lulu Small Paws

Hi Robin and Bonnie,
I got an email yesterday that there were 3 bichons at Animal Welfare in Chicago that needed rescue. This center is only an intake facility. If rescues or no kill shelters do not take them, than they are euthanized. These 3 were running out of time. There were, 4 bichons at this facility but a small breed rescue came through and only took the 1 yr old bichon male, which left the other 3. I picked up 3-4 yr old Lulu today, 2 yr old Joey and 6 yr old Coco.
I am e-mailing you pics of all of them.

Here is Lulu. She is 8.5 #'s and thin. The facility did shave her because she was her fur was in such bad condition. She was a stray. She will need 16 days quarantine @ $8 per day, spay, and some vaccinations. They did give her a distemper and bordetella. Her estimated vetting/quarantine will be $500-600.
I will forward you pics of the boys in different emails.

Subj: Beamer estimate for approval

Hi Robin,
I got the estimate for Beamer (one of our shelter pulls). He is estimated to be 1 year old, 18.6 #'s. He has an ear infection that needs flushed. His 16 day quarantine, neuter, and ear cleaning is estimated at $545.12. Just waiting on your approval for this one. Thanks! He should go quickly once we get him taken care of, the groomer was able to save most of his hair, and they did it for us for free. He's a handsome boy!

Okay, Mid Valley Vet estimate came in at approx $729.90 (they put bonded pairs in the same cage to save us money, aren't they wonderful?)

That's for 16 days of boarding, neuter, cone of shame, fecal and heartworm test, first heartworm dose(free), Frontline (free), Microchip (free), for both boys.

Do I have the okay on that one?

Here are the pics of 5-6 yr old Buttercup.( I emailed an update on her a few days ago but didn't have pics) She was going to be PTS at a high kill animal control. She was a total different dog when Kathy and I got her out of animal control. She was backed into a corner of the cage, shaking and terrified. Once we got her out, we got kisses, tail wags and smiles.(See below) She had been at animal control since mid Oct. (not a nice place). She is recovering from her spay and is currently in quarantine @ the Animal Hospital. Estimate is $500-600.

This is how you can help us to help them. I have to be out of the office part of the day, today but I am happy to will issue matching challenges if any come in, as soon as possible.

Did I mention this? HELP! All My Love, Robin

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
