Gem of the Day: "It is a fearful thing
to love what death can touch."
~ Anonymous ~

"Lulu" Danklefsen passed away last
night at age 15.
She had been run
over by a train back in
2005, and lost one
of her feet.
A prosthetic boot
was made especially for
Lulu.
Lulu is once again running on all fours on
streets paved with pure gold.
Thank you Sandy and Paul for loving her so
very much. Story below.

Some of you may remember back in February
of 2005, when we were contacted by a local
animal control in Ohio.
They said it was
about a dog that
was found
near the train track,
wearing our tags,
missing
part of her leg.
The vets suspected
she had
been hit by the train.
She had been recently adopted and had gotten
away from her new owners. She was a puppy
mill rescue.
Sandy and Paul took her into foster care
and began the process of surgeries, and rehab.
Then they gave Lulu their last name.
I spoke to Sandy back in November. The producer's
of Inside Edition had shown some interest
in including Lulu's story in our segment.
Sandy told me that Lulu was 15 years old
and was doing great, and that she had just
returned from the groomers.
This morning, I got this e-mail from Sandy.

Hi Robin,
This is about LuLu. Yesterday she hadn't
been feeling well. Wasn't eating, so I cooked
up some rice and chicken, she ate very little.
The sad news is she went to The Rainbow Bridge
at 4:45 a.m. this morning. I held her for
3 hours then it was time for her to take
the stairway to heaven, oh God please welcome
her to the Rainbow Bridge to run and play
with all the others that came before her.
This was so quick, she did not suffer much.
As you know she was one tough cookie!
GOD SPEED LULU I
will see you again
someday!
Sandy Danklefsen>
Reflecting back on Lulu's life, brought smiles
and tears for me this morning.
Most rescue groups would have been forced
to euthanize her after the train incident.
But because of you, because of this magnificent
obsession, we were able to raise the needed
funds for her medical care.
Still today we are
contacted as a last
resort
for so many Bichons.
We are asked to take in diabetic Bichons,
Bichons who were having seizures, and of
course, the inevitable, "He is just
too old, and is starting to get sick now
so I don't want him anymore" reason
for surrendering a Bichon to rescue.
Without you, we would not be able to take
in Bichons needing medical care due to disease,
illness, or simply to age.
Without you, Bichons
like Lulu would not
have touched the
lives of so many.
We have many Bichons now, though they weren't
hit by a train, have medical issues that
need attention.
We have heartworm treatments happening in
South Texas, diabetics who are being regulated
in TN., and Bichons being tested for Cushing's
in New York.
Some days, I stare at this laptop screen,
hoping that something will come to me, so
that I can convey to you the urgency of their
needs.
I pray for some miraculous
words. Some miraculous
story. Some miraculous
rescue to tell you
about.
Nothing out of the
ordinary came to me and
that's the reason
you didn't get a newsletter
this morning.
This morning, Lulu
went to be with God, but
if ever there was
a miraculous story, it
was her's.
We don't seem to be able to raise funds for
the "nothing out of the ordinary is
wrong" Bichons, yet when you add it
up, they are costing us an average of $1300.00
plus, per day.
We really do need your help.
If you are able to
help us to continue to
rescue Bichons in
need of medical care, below
is the way for you
to do that.
Godspeed precious Lulu. You were loved. You
were wanted. Godspeed. All My Love, Robin
P.S. Below is an update on one little guy who
was rescued by Small Paws last week after
being surrendered by his owners who were
moving. He is 11, has cloudy eyes and was scheduled
for euthanasia at the shelter, had we not
come for him THAT day.

"Joey" has since had his teeth
cleaned, gotten his shots, and was groomed
before going to his new forever home with
one of his vet's other clients who happened
to be there when he was brought in.
Many thanks to Small
Pawser Mary Morgan
for picking Joey
up from the shelter!
Joey was groomed like a poodle, but I beg
to differ. We made sure to tell him that
a haircut doesn't change who you are!
"A rose by any other name would smell
as sweet."

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006
When I first saw this beautiful picture of
Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought
it was truly the epitome of what we do, and
why we do it. I wanted to use this black
and white picture of Humphrey, taken only
days before his death due to congestive heart
failure, to let those who may be new to Small
Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without
Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known
love. He would have died in a kill shelter,
sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and
Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
