Gem of the Day: "If it is worth playing,
it is worth paying the price to win."

~Bear Bryant~

This Bichon in yesterday's newsletter was just reclaimed by it's owner from the CACC in Chicago. This was the one where we didn't know if it is was a male or female. We had put a hold on him/her for SPR for after his/her stray hold was up, just in case.

So along with fighting this deadly and very expensive illness, we have Baby Boo, and several others needing surgeries, such as FHO's and bladder stone removal.

Meet Louie, whom Sara's team rescued from the CACC.

Louie's tail is down because he is in pain.

This is the estimate JUST FOR THE BLADDER STONE REMOVAL. It doesn't include extra precautions for Canine Flu, his regular vetting, or a dental. This price reflects a 30% rescue discount. I think it's good for you all to be able to see what we see, regarding the estimates. I really need to be able to authorize his surgery asap.

6 year old Louie was rescued from a high kill shelter. He was a surrender for urinating in the house, but was house trained before. The vet did a urine test he has oxilate crystals. They did X-rays and he has bladder stones and needs surgery. The surgery is $1330.00 not including 230.00 for extra quarantine and Canine Flu precautions, plus he will need a dental. His total will be about $1810.00. This includes a 30% rescue discount.

Baby Boo's estimate, below, is for $2700.00 for two ear ablation surgeries, precautions from Canine Flu, and his normal vetting.

Two year old Baby Boo had a raging ear infection which went untreated, since he was a tiny puppy.

Baby Boo has ear abrasions which must now be surgically removed.
(Not his ears, the abrasions)

Miraculously, Baby Boo still has all of his hearing.

We have the following matching donation challenges.

They can be met, in part or in whole.

If they are met, the challenge will make that donation and the match makes it double for our very serious needs at this time.

First, from Sue Gellar, we have this challenge for $1500.00. Is there anyone who is able to match this challenge? Thank you so very much Sue.

Louie,

To other Bichon Owners:

If your precious Bichon got the canine flu – how much would you pay your vet to cure them??

According to the newsletter – the number is $1500. Would you pay that for your beloved Bichon?

If you are lucky enough to have a healthy Bichon – please consider donating the $1500 it would cost to treat your own Bichon to help treat one of the sick rescues.

Mine are healthy – please use my $1500 to treat one who is not.
Sue, Star, Fosse and Electra>

And from our Team Leader to the Carolinas, Kathryn Smith, we have this amazing matching challenge for $1000.00. I say amazing, not only because of the generous amount, but because Kathryn doesn't even have Bichon. She has Scotties. But she loves what we do and how we do it, so she is one of us and has been for many years. Thank you Kathryn! Thank you!

Please contact me for details if you would like to attend. Someone asked if our dogs would be safe at this bash. The concern I expressed in yesterday's newsletter was about taking your dogs to places with strange dogs, where people may be bringing recently rescued shelter dogs. The dogs attending this bash are dogs we know to be healthy. Thank you again Jeanne!

Hi Robin! This canine flu situation is just unbelievable. I remember when our shelter had an outbreak of the "regular" canine flu a few years ago and the new director had 75 dogs euthanized on his first day on the job. It's so scary, but I'm glad we are at least trying to save as many as possible.

I'm in complete support of your decision, because I know as much as we want to help these poor castoffs, our own animals have already entrusted us to do everything possible for them.

I'll send in $100 for 6 months to help with this current situation. I'd like to challenge other foster moms and dads to pledge a bit for 6 months, whether its $10 or $100.

With your support, we will survive this. We will save everyone who can possible be saved from this epidemic.

We're getting reports of it showing up in the Dallas area now.

This is a strain from China of which our canine flu vaccines are not effective.

From the American Veterinary Medical Association

Q: What is canine influenza?
A: Canine influenza (CI), or dog flu, is a highly contagious respiratory infection of dogs that is caused by an influenza A virus. In the U.S., canine influenza has been caused by two influenza strains. The first strain reported in the United States, beginning in 2004, was an H3N8 influenza A virus. This strain is closely related to the virus that causes equine influenza, and it is thought that the equine influenza virus mutated to produce the canine strain. In 2015, an outbreak that started in Chicago was caused by a separate canine influenza virus, H3N2. The strain causing the 2015 outbreak was almost genetically identical to an H3N2 strain previously reported only in Asia – specifically, Korea, China and Thailand. In Asia. This H3N2 strain is believed to have resulted from the direct transfer of an avian influenza virus – possibly from among viruses circulating in live bird markets – to dogs.

That's all for now. All My Love, Robin

We had him for the last five years, He is very obedient normally when we say "stay" he will stop wherever he is, so some times we are used to play with him in the yard for he loves to run around the yard in circles, during that time we did not put him on the leash, this particular day he was not on leash and did not yield to the command when he saw some dog across the road. It took off so suddenly the on coming driver did not have time to stop the car. That is how it happened.>

Humphrey Sisco
Dec 26, 1993~ Aug 30, 2006

When I first saw this beautiful picture of Cheri Sisco's "Humphrey", I thought it was truly the epitome of what we do, and why we do it. I wanted to use this black and white picture of Humphrey, taken only days before his death due to congestive heart failure, to let those who may be new to Small Paws, know what we do and why we do it. Without Small Paws, Humphrey would have never known love. He would have died in a kill shelter, sick and alone. Because of Small Paws, and Cheri Sisco, he lived, he loved, and he smiled.
