These are pictures of the Identical Twins in their new foster home! These are the two Bichons that were rescued from an Oklahoma shelter on Monday. The note left with them said they are identical twins, born from the same sac on March 2, 2002. They are four years old. One of them had been attacked by a bigger dog in the shelter. Thanks to all of you, Small Paws has healed their hurts, and we are working on healing their little hearts.

Ok..here they are! The Twins!

They laugh alike,

they walk alike,

At times they even talk alike...what a handsome pair!

They have now been adopted by a couple who
really dote over them in Texas!

Pretty Penny, Penny

We have another medical issue Her name is Penny and it is going to take a pretty one to get her out of pain. She is 12. You know how we have always said we will honor the lives of the sick, injured and the old.

I've always believed that we are teaching the next generation how to care for US....by the way we treat our old dogs.

Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine

Pretty Penny has tumors on her neck and head that have to be removed as they are bursting and bleeding. The vet doesn't think they are cancerous, but they are painful and making one bloody mess.

I'm going to show you a picture. If ya doan wanna look..you better close your eyes now. One...two...threee...

Here's Penny, the 12-yr old female..... these pics show the condition of these growths. They are about the size of a quarter, and she has at least 6 that she keeps scratching til they bleed. There are smaller warts on various places on her body, but these large ones are the problem and should be removed ASAP.

There is a big one on the top of her head,
Two are on her neck and shoulder
There is a large one on her hindquarter

Penny is going to need immediate medical care. Not only was she scared about leaving her only home and family, but I really don't think she is feeling well either. She has at least 6 large tumor size warts on her head, back and hindquarters that she has scratched bloody raw, and I'm concerned that she will end up with a serious infection if they are not removed.

She is a bloody mess today because she had scratched 3 of these and they were bleeding and clotted in her hair. Open wounds in this heat and fleas in the grass are not a good combination. She is also going to need her teeth cleaned, so that could be done when the warts are surgically removed. I believe she is already spayed. She will need all of her shots and a good grooming. She is beginning to lose some of her hair, not sure why, but I suspect a thyroid problem or poor nutrition. I think we should get a blood panel done on her because of her age.

This is how you can help SPR to help Pretty Penny.
No amount is too small.

We had a good turn out of Small Pawser's for the picnic sponsored by The Bichon Frise Club of Dallas. Casper's wonderful foster parents, Len and Debbie Jarzynski brought Casper. He was the Grand Marshall of the rescue parade.

Casper at the vet's...soon after he was rescued from lying in the street for three days...unable to stand, walk, or lift his little head, due to a serious spinal cord injury.

Casper today...able to run...thanks to neurosurgery that Small Paws provided on his spinal cord!

Here is a picture of The Club presenting a $200.00 check to Marilyn to go towards Casper vet bills.
From left to right.....Tony Fonzo, outgoing President..... Sam Rogers, incoming President, and Marilyn holding Casper. Look at that smile on Casper's face.

And here is Casper waiting for his next hug and kiss. He was "da man" of the day! He is super friendly and gave kisses to anyone that looked his way.
Len and Debbie have done a fabulous job with him.
BTW.....he is getting neutered today.

These two little boys have quite a story to share!
At the 18th Annual Day in the Park celebration, hosted by the Bichon Frise Club of Northern Ca.,they won the costume contest with their rendition of "Puppy Mill Escapees!"

When I was at the Day in the Park, two years ago, I met a woman there who was just not able to function, due to extreme grief. She and her husband had lost their Bichon to old age, and she could not even get out of bed in the mornings. She cried the whole time at the picnic two years ago. The club members asked me to talk to her, so I grabbed some kleenex and walked over to her.

I told her that her baby...would want she and her husband to give another of her kind, a home like she had been given with them. She was worried that she would be betraying her Bichon that had passed away, if she adopted another Bichon.

She wanted to know if her Bichon was in heaven. I told her that if there are white horses at the right hand of God, (And the Bible says there are!) then there are white doggies there too!

I prayed with her...I prayed for emotional healing for her. We somehow convinced she and her husband to adopt not one, but TWO puppies...both came from puppy mills in Mo.

Today, she is smiling to beat the band! Isn't that what our magnificent obsession is all about? Yes, we are a rescue for Bichons... but even more than that, we are about caring for the people who love the Bichons! This year, she came over to me...took off her sunglasses so I could see her beautiful tearless eyes, and told me she wanted to let me know how much she appreciates what Small Paws does...and that she wanted to personally give me encouragement. WOW. These two boys did that in her life!

When these two walked by in the rescue parade, I heard screaming and laughter...which got there right before the boys did. We were all just about rolling on the ground! What a great idea for costumes...and what a difference two little heart healers can make!

Exciting Update From Our Small Paws Rescue Outreach: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico,
Casa Andrea!

Thanks to your support, Small Paws sends $500.00 monthly to help Andrea and Oscar the Vet, rescue the Bichons and Bichon Mixes of Puerto Vallarta Mexico

Hi Robin:

Enclosed are before and after pictures (one month after the rescue and three months after), we still have him here, two people want to adopt him already, his name is Chaparito and he is an albino, very very sweet, he should be all set, our next mission is to go to San Jose, a village outside Vallarta where they have a lot of small poodle mixes abandoned, (Editor's Note: Remember they call all Bichons "poodle mixes" down there!) will keep you informed and send you pictures,

Thanks again for all your help

Andrea

Chaparito upon first coming into rescue.
Your donation dollars for our sister rescue in Mexico, helped Andrea to heal his hurts and heal his heart!

Chaparito was skin a bones, and covered in fleas and ticks. He was very sick when Andrea first rescued him. Chaperto is an albino, so his skin is very sensitive.

Healthy, and happy, Chaperito rests in the courtyard of Andrea's hotel, Casa Andrea!

Chaperito is a lap dog and sits in Andrea's lap!

No, he's not in the FBI, but he wears this ball cap to protect his eyes from the rays of the sun. You can't see them here, but he has pink eyes, that are very sensitive to light.

Thanks to your help, Andrea and Oscar the vet are traveling to nearby villages to rescue abandoned "poodle mixes", vet them, and place them in loving homes, many times with Americans coming to stay in Andrea's hotel, Casa Andrea.

They are also travel to conduct monthly spay/neuter clinics, free of charge to the residents of the nearby villages, as a result of our monthly donation from Small Paws!

Last weekend, they altered 22 cats and dogs, all belonging to one owner. Those dogs and cats will not be adding to the pet population now, thanks to your support of our sister rescue, Casa Andrea in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!

URGENT MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Small Paws just received the most unbelievable news that FOUR Bichon puppies, all from the same litter, are coming into rescue from a commercial kennel in Mo. There were FIVE...but one has already died from this birth defect.

All FOUR of them have severe heart murmurs and need surgery or they will die.

We have done 28 Heart Murmur Repairs in the past at a cost of $2000.00 each.

We would like to be able to take all four of these babies to Texas A&M NEXT Tuesday morning, but we have to raise the funds for these surgeries, first.

Can you help us to help these four puppies, all born on August 5, 2005?

("Robin, I thought that you would get a kick outta these shots. Last night my Mom dressed Elmo in his pj's and snapped one of him snoozing. She must be stopped! :)

Let me tell you all about little "Elmo" who just came in, in Georgia. Elmo is only four years old.

He looked as if he had once met a Bichon and he flat needed our help. He had been attacked by big dogs at a kill shelter and was scheduled for the big E.

Wonderful Rose Coward, Dana Perez's ( Our Ga. Team Leader) Mom is nursing little Elmo now in Ga. Rose is also the volunteer who makes our belly bands for us!

On the low end, Elmo would need a $700.00 operation to have his leg amputated. On the high end, it would probably be about $1500.00-2000.00 to repair, if it is even possible. I'm going on what other ortho surgeries of this type have cost in the past. We had him in emergency this past weekend where he almost died.

We did everything we could to save his life and so far, so good. His bills are stacking up here.

Robin, I just wanted to update you on a situation here:

I picked up a bichon/llasa mix, Elmo from a kill shelter on Wednesday. Elmo suffered a broken leg at some point in his life and no longer has the use of his back left leg. It will probably be best to amputate at some point. He was in pretty bad shape having been attacked by two large dogs at the shelter just before I arrived to get him. Because he was so matted and his hair was so long we could not initially see any puncture wounds. I took him to the groomer and my vet and once his hair was shaved you could see numerous bruises, scratches and bites on his body. The vet put him on antibiotics and we came home. He was very quiet yesterday but he ate and drank some. This morning...he would not eat or drink and he was having trouble breathing. What was a small area of puffiness on his neck became a large swollen area. I took him immediately in to the vet this morning and Dr. Human prepared to do surgery on his neck. They began putting a tube down Elmo's throat for the anesthesia and discovered that there was a lot of trauma to the inside of his throat. They almost lost him and had to help him breath for a while. They decided to give him an injection of cortisone to help quiet the area and hopefully get the swelling to go down. I'm picking him up later this afternoon and will watch him through the weekend. Elmo is a wonderful sweet boy (4 years old)
Robin,
Here are some pictures of Elmo's injuries. The shelter is fully aware of what happened to him. Unfortunately, they were pretty blase about the whole thing. The estimate to amputate his leg is $700. My Vet is calling a specialist this week to find out if there is any way to actually fix the leg. I do not know if it's possible and how much the cost would be. Elmo is doing well today...eating and soaking up lots of love. I took him to my Mom's house for some T.L.C. She loves to nurse the really sick and hurting babies.

Dana>

We need help to be able to help little Elmo who looks as if he may have once met a Bichon and a BIG DOG WIF BIG TEEFIES by the looks of his wounds.:(

Subj: Vivi's Found and Home!
Date: 8/14/2005 10:26:39 PM Central Daylight Time
From: tealhouse@gci.net

Greetings to all, and our thanks for your love and prayers!
Please forward this to all who have been notified of Vivi's disappearance to let them know that Vivi is back in our home, newly bathed and getting all kinds of attention and treats - she was pretty hungry, so we don't think she'd found much if anything to eat, but there are lots of small streams as well as a big river so she had access to plenty of water.

Vivi, whom we have decided to rename Button (my husband says her little buttons eyes and nose provided a name that suits her), has had an adventure for the past 5 1/2 days that I think I'll consider writing in the first person - maybe not, but it certainly would provide some good material for a new movie like Benjie or Homeward Bound.

Kathleen and I had walked the mile up and down our road about 4 or 5 times since she'd arrived. Last night Vivi was seen behind our neighbor's house 3/4 mile down the road, so we rushed down there to look and couldn't find her. She was hiding well, but we left her crate and a live trap right where she was seen in a little grove of trees, with her blankets and food in each. Kathleen had gone out at 6:30 this morning to check the live trap and it was empty, then the neighbor called us at 7:30 and said Vivi was in the live trap. K. and My hubby went down and brought Vivi home, then K. and I bathed her before leaving for church.

We were and are rejoicing that our little Button appears to be in fine shape, she's not sick or injured and got her muscles all in great shape after all her running and exploring. Her harness is on securely and she has selected her favorite spot from which to watch the household go about our normal activities and happenings. She is eating and going potty as though nothing much has gone on, so we are confident she'll do well from here on out. We humans have learned a lesson or three about how to help a rescue dog make the transition to a whole new world and will do much better from now on, too.

God bless all of you who have been concerned for Button (Vivi) and us, and have kept us in your prayers. We are so thankful that God is merciful and has given us another opportunity to share our lives and love with one of his sweet little creatures. Add us to you mailing list so we can return the prayers any time you have a need.

With warm hugs and tummy tickles,

SUMMERTIME
July 28, 2005

I drove over last night to Missouri and picked up three more of our Bichons who had been living in a commercial kennel.

The temps have been so hot before now. Last weekend, it was a reported 110 in Springfield, Mo. These three Bichons were kept outside and survived that terrible heat.:(

Last night, a cold front came through and it rained. We did the transfer today in 74 degrees, which was a wonderful respite from the heat, both for me and for the dogs!

These three were covered in fleas, and you are about to see the shape they are in.

Here are the three of them...just arriving at our Tulsa vet's office.

This is our newest baby girl, who was born in March. She has an internal parasite problem ( we think...tests will be done to confirm) giving her diarrhea.:( She is very sweet.

We are going to try to save this little girl's eyes. Dr. Russell says she has deep corneal ulcers in both eyes and needs to see a specialist immediately.

UPDATE

This little girl saw a Board Certified eye doctor in Oklahoma City, on an emergency basis on Thursday, July 28. We are trying to save her eyes!

UPDATE! August 15, 2005
Last week we took little JAYCEE back to the eye surgeon for a re-check. SHE CAN SEE! We got her into rescue just in time! She will have one more month of eye treatments and then she will be back to normal! She feels so much better now! Thank you for helping to save her eyesight!

A male... there was no paperwork and Doc will have to guestimate ages.

This is the standard USDA collar which we have to cut off with wire cutters. Can you see the fleas? Of course we Capstared and Frontlined them all, and sprayed and rinsed out the crates.

These are the teeth of the little male. Poor baby.

Be careful! Second hand smoke can
affect the health of your pets!

Small Paws was recently chosen to be the recipient of a very prestigious award. The Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute is a group that began back in the 1960's when a small group of courageous flight attendants took on the tobacco industry, claiming they were becoming sick from flying in planes and breathing in second hand smoke.

They WON and the settlement included the establishment of a not-for-profit medical research foundation with funding by the tobacco industry of $300 million.

This is a list of their previous award recipients. Notice they are all scientists, researchers or doctors!

Small Paws Rescue is the FIRST NON MEDICAL organization to receive the Flight Attendants Medical Research Institute Community Service Award, because of "our positive response to bringing awareness of the dangers of second hand tobacco smoke exposure to pets."

Small Paws Rescue graciously thanks the Flight Attendants Medical Research Institute for this beautiful award!_______________________________________

Scarlett is a very dear 9 year old puppymill rescue. She came to SPR with a mammary tumor and dislocated eye lens. The tumor was benign but because of the extreme pain that a dislocated lens creates, Scarlett had to have her eye removed. she looks like a member of the
Red Hat Society doesn't she! Scarlett is being fostered in Ohio.

Okay guys are you ready for this? Lulu no longer will be making the trip to Brookpark to see, "The Famous Dr. Ferguson, He released her on Thursday with flying colors!!! She showed him how she can
walk/run in her boot and how she uses her leg that was crushed so badly! Than he put a smiley face on her weight chart. She has went from 20.40 pounds down to 18.00 even. She needs to drop down to 14.00 pounds than keep her there. Dr. Ferguson spoke highly of Small Paws and how we all prayed and rallied together to save her blessed soul! God has a plan for Lulu, her time on earth is far from over! She could very well be a therapy dog for children or the elderly with disabilities. She could also be a Poster Dog for Small Paws Rescue to the many gatherings that take place each year! She may very well be staying here in Ohio, we are thinking about adopting her!!! Sending pictures of Lulu and Dr. Ferguson, Lulu sitting pretty and her showing off her "high fashion boot"!!!

Isn't she just a doll!

What a miracle! We are thanking God for Lulu's healing!

And the people just kept coming!

Robin,

We had a bang-up day today with Stamford area residents in introducing Small Paws Rescue and its foster and adoption programs. People not only came
out- they came in droves!!! I cannot begin to tell you how receptive we were!!! I was joined by Bonnie Margolis and Catherine Colucci and we all spoke non-stop for 2 hours. There were mothers, fathers, grandparents, teenagers- I even met one of my children's teachers from middle school who I have not seen in 12 years. Needless to say, everyone not only enjoyed seeing some of the area volunteers' fluffs but they were so eager to learn about Small Paws Rescue and its mission to save the bichon.

I have been home for 2 hours and my phone has rung non-stop!! I am helping people find a dog to adopt and how to complete the on-line application. There were at least 20 people of which half were interested only in foster care! It would be wonderful to have some of my neighbors from Stamford become foster homes.

The folks at the Ark Pet Supply deserve an applause as well. They gave half of their store to SPR's cause today and were very gracious hosts. They
have offered to do this again next Fall before the Christmas season.

I just wanted to let you know that more of these events need to get underway throughout the country and anyone wanting to set one up may email me for some direction. This was not only a fun thing but a very productive day as well!! Joanne Raus
