Heart Murmur Repair Number 61

April 20, 2008
UPDATE! Baby Kelly came through her heart surgery just beautifully and has already come home the hospital to her foster Mom.
THANK YOU ALL FOR SAVING HER LITTLE LIFE!

"Kelly" will be our 61st Heart Murmur Surgery. She came to us with a grade 6 out of 6 PDA heart murmur from Amish Puppy Mill country. We hope to raise funds for her to have surgery with Dr. Thaibinh Nguyenba, at Medvet in Columbus Ohio. He says she is not medically stable enough to travel to Texas A&M.

When we lost MIKEY in New York, after attempting the coil technique there, I promised myself that with all other heart murmur Bichons, I would just get them down to Texas A&M where we have had success after success.

BUT Baby Kelly is not medically stable enough to travel so we will need to do the surgery there in Ohio.

Can you turn on your heart light once more for Baby Kelly? Her surgery will run right at $2000.00 in order to save her life.

Information About Our Programs

Here are our newest girls (and one boy from Joplin) with the new last name of Small Paws!

KJRH local news in Tulsa, Oklahoma (the local NBC affiliate) filmed us unloading our newest girls with the new last name of Small Paws..

I don't know if they have ever been really groomed. This one's nails are wrapped with mats. With dread locks on her feet.
Several of them were shaved, probably because they were getting ready to come to us.

This little girl has something odd going on all over her tummy area.

She either has a hernia, or a mass or both, or she had a weird C-section. She is not lactating.
No telling how many litters she has had. She has had her LAST litter now. Now she is ours.

Another of the females. She was scared to look at us or for us to look at her! These are pretty small Bichons over all.

"Where are we and have you seen Gracie's babies? They're missing."

I swear I think one of them singing.

I cried over this one. The kennel owner had told me that if she had a nursing Mom she would just pull the babies and "stick 'em on another female." I asked her please not to do that. That we can come back. I didn't want her to take anyone's babies from them before it was time. Too late. This little one was looking everywhere for her babies. Milk was coming out like gang busters as we were holding her. We put little white stuffy toys in with her, and I told her how sorry I was that someone took her babies.

You tell me if she is upset that her babies were taken from her. My heart was just broken for her.

Jennifer, our vet tech, holds the lone male. He is one year old and is as stiff as a board when held. Only one year old and scared stiff like that.

Another one is held for what really does seem like the first time. Dave was the one to reach in and get them out of the cages there at her kennel.

Another of the small females.

This is the one that I thought may have been a pet at one time. She was just waging her tail to beat he band!

This was one of the largest girls from today's rescue.

Baby Bedford is only 8 months old and he has been hit by a car. He has a broken pelvis in two places and he screams in pain. Joyce Meier said it was almost more than she could stand to hear him crying in pain while she drove him to the hospital from the shelter. He is now at Advance Critical Care and Internal Medicine in Culver City, CA. 310 558-6100.

UPDATE ON BABY BEDFORD!

New Update on "Ellie", the Bichon formally known as Baby Bedford!

In a message dated 11/18/2007 12:38:35 A.M. Central Standard Time, joyce.meier@gmail.com writes:
Hi Robin.

I wanted to let you know that Ellie came through surgery yesterday very well. They also gave her a bath while under she was so dirty. I am hoping she can leave the vet's office Monday or Tuesday and come to my house to recuperate. We will continue taking great care of her. Please let everyone know that she appreciates them saving her. The vet tech told me this morning that she was giving him kisses to was so grateful and feeling so much better!

Take Care,

Joyce

Urgent!

Two Hit By Car Medical Emergencies
Saturday Sept 29, 2007

3 year old "Mimi" was taken to a Northern California
shelter as an injured stray. She was scheduled to be euthanized when her owners failed to claim her. SPR was called at the last possible hour.
Our vets have diagnosed that she has a broken pelvis, probably from being hit by a car. She can't walk on her right back leg. Mimi is scheduled to see the orthopedic surgeon on Monday, October 1, 2007 to determine if they can repair her broken pelvis. If they can., the estimate for the surgery is $4000.00 minus a 15% rescue discount. We'll know more on Monday evening.

3 year old "Jack" was hit by a car on Friday, September 28. His owners could not afford emergency surgery for him, and he was taken to a MN. vet for euthanasia. SPR was called and immediately went to work to raise funds for Jack, who was diagnosed with a very painful crushed pelvis. He screams when he moves. The estimate for the surgery if for between $1500.00 and $2500.00.
On Sunday, Sept 30, Jack will be transferred to the
Affiliated Emergency Service
4180 Thielman Lane
St Cloud, MN 56301
320-258-3481
Dr Calvin Kobluk, a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon,
will be doing the surgery as an emergency.

Sunday Night 10:00 Update!

Ok, I just spoke with Dr Calvin Kobluk whom, according to what I have read, is a pretty high powered board certified orthopedic surgeon, and we are so fortunate to have him taking care of our little Jack!

Jack will have surgery sometime tonight!

I did find this web page about the surgery he is doing and it sure sounds like what he was talking about doing.

Fracture of the Pelvis in Dogs

"For most situations of pelvic fractures that do not involve the acetabulum, a bone plate and screws are usually used to support the fractured ilium. Fractures of the ischium and pubis are usually not repaired. Fractures that do involve the acetabulum may need to have the acetabulum carefully reconstructed and stabilized or a procedure in which the femoral head and neck are cut off the shaft of the femur might be recommended. This procedure is done in order to minimize the chance for the animal to have long-term problems associated with a hip joint that heals in an abnormal way leading to future arthritis. If a sacroiliac luxation is also present, the luxation may require repair and stabilization as well. When both sides of the pelvis are broken, only one or both sides may require surgical repair.'

Mimi, who was ALSO hit by a car and picked up by the shelter as a stray, is scheduled to see the ortho guy tomorrow in Northern California. Let's hope for as good of news for her, as we got for Jack!

Thank you all for helping Small Paws to help Jack and Mimi!

Read how these two darling Bichon girls were rescued as strays from the streets of a Florida neighborhood. One was injured and one was sick.

A good Samaritan coaxed them to her with food. No telling how long they have been on the streets, fending for themselves. We have named them "Hope" and "Faith".

They were obviously in need of care. Hope had a very high white blood count. indicating an infection.

Faith had a raw spot on her back that was infected.
You know that had to hurt.

Can you spell G-R-A-T-I-T-U-D-E? We are thanking God for their safe rescue. There are alligators in those canals in the Florida neighborhoods! The last alligator they opened up had 13 dog collars inside. :(
Both girls are safe at the vet's office now.
The estimate for their complete vetting is for $700.00 for the pair.

Tyler has been found and is safe and sound back in SPR's custody! Thanks to all of you who covered this baby in prayer while he was missing!

If I Give My Heart to You Lyrics
Sung by Doris Day

If I give my heart to you
Will you handle it with care
Will you always treat me tenderly
And in every way be fair

If I give my heart to you
Will you give me all your love
Will you swear that you'll be true to me
By the light that shines above

And will you sigh with me when I'm sad
Smile with me when I'm glad
And always be as you are with me tonight

Think it over and be sure
Please don't answer till you do
When you promise all those things to me
Then I'll give my heart to you

And will you sigh with me when I'm sad
Smile with me when I'm glad
And always be as you are with me tonight

Think it over and be sure
Please don't answer till you do
When you promise all those things to me
Then I'll give my heart to you

Elle Mae is in congestive heart failure. Her lungs were filling up with fluid. Dr. Akin told me that her heart is HUGE due to being overworked, and the PDA is HUGE. She is one sick little girl.

They are going to ligate her (crack the chest open) in the morning first thing. She is too small to coil or plug.

We have NOT raised what we need for her surgery yet. She needs your help.

Update April 26, 2007

Special Needs Bichon Puppy Needs a Special Home

"Bon Jovi" has been adopted!

Fill Out an Online Adoption Application for Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi was born in a Missouri puppy mill on November 10, 2006. After being rescued, he was diagnosed by the cardiologists at Texas A&M University with “severe pulmonic stenosis with a severely hypoplastic annulus.” This means that Bon Jovi’s heart is so defective that there is no surgery (or treatment of any other kind) that can repair it.

The cardiologists have prescribed a beta blocker for Bon Jovi that they hope will help to stabilize his condition; he will most likely require this medication for the rest of his life. There is no way of knowing how long Bon Jovi will live, nor can we predict how his life will end. He could die a very sudden death, or he could have a stroke or fainting episodes, or he could live for many years.

Right now, however, Bon Jovi is living life to the fullest! He is a very happy, playful, mischievous, and loving puppy. He tires somewhat easily because of his heart condition, but after a quick nap he’s ready to burn some more energy. He sleeps in bed with his foster parents and he stays in a large crate when left alone. He loves giving kisses to people, and he washes his foster sister’s face. He does not like being alone and he will cry and bark if he can’t be with you in the same room.

Bon Jovi needs a very special home with people who are willing to give him their whole heart, even if it is to be only for a short while. He will return every bit of love you give him many times over.

Heart Murmur Puppies number 44, 45, and 46

Three Bichon Puppies have serious heart murmurs
and need our help.
We have named these little girls in honor of Valentine's Day.

BonBon is 11 weeks old and has a grade 5-6 heart murmur.
Her eyes do NOT look good.

(Editor's Note: Doc wrote to tell us that BonBon is actually a little male, so his new name is "Bon Jovi"!

Folks, we need your help. We brought 12 Bichons from the commercial kennels of Missouri yesterday, into the loving arms of Small Paws.
Read the newsletter about this rescue.

Three of them are puppies with serious heart murmurs.

They will not survive without having these heart murmurs repaired.

Heart Murmur Repair runs between $2500-3000 for each one.
The costs will be between $7500.00-$9000.00 to get surgeries for all three of these sick Bichon Puppies.

These will be heart murmur repairs numbers 44, 45, and 46.

UPDATE
Feb 3, 2006

BABY ELMO UPDATE! October 30, 2006

We saw little Elmo this past weekend at the 8th Annual Small Paws Rescue Okie Bash, in Tulsa, Oklahoma! He is now weighing in at over 4 pounds now AND his esophageal stricture has now opened! He is eating without tossing his cookies! The vets at Texas A&M tell us that they can't explain how he seemed to have had a delayed response to the balloon stricture surgery that they did in early September. We CAN explain it! He had thousands of people all over the world praying for him! Thanks to all who prayed for Elmo! He is being adopted by a Registered Vet Tech in San Antonio, Texas!

Thursday September 07, 2006

Please help us to help Baby Elmo.

We have an emergency right now with little Elmo. He is only six weeks old, but he is dying because he can't keep any food down due to a birth defect in his esophagus.

A breeder near Dallas asked us to take little Elmo into rescue, as she knew this was obviously something very serious. This is the first case like this that Small Paws has ever had.

Elmo was staying with Marilyn and Brad Brewster, in Ft, Worth, but Monday night night he started going downhill. Brad and Marilyn rushed him to the emergency room at Texas A&M, three hours from their home.

I have attached a photo of Elmo being examined by a doc last night at A&M -- it's a little blurry, sorry for the poor resolution. >

Subj: Baby Elmo update
Date: 9/5/2006 1:16:43 PM Central Daylight Time
From: mbrewster@eavi.com
To: Pup3@aol.com, Fuzzalot@aol.com

I just heard from Dr. Fabrack at Texas A&M regarding Elmo's diagnosic tests. They found that Elmo was born with an esophageal stricture behind his heart. They can treat this condition by endoscopy, where they put a camera down his throat and then inflate a balloon at the stricture to dilate his esophagus. The doctor said that they will have to do this treatment anywhere from 2 to 10 times, depending upon how quickly Elmo's esophagus will open, with 3 or 4 days between each treatment.

The results should be successful and permanent, but there is a slight chance that Elmo will require the treatment again at some point later in his life. Elmo will always require canned food, or maybe even canned food mixed with water for as long as he lives.

The first treatment will cost $1,200, and each following treatment will cost between $400 and $600.
If he requires only two treatments it will be about $1,800. And we have already spent $1,500 for his tests.

The docs at A&M are waiting to hear back from me before they start the treatments. They can begin tomorrow, Wednesday. the sooner the better, because little Elmo isn't able to keep food down. I will await your call on what to do.

Thanks, Marilyn>

Elmo is having his first treatment at 10 Thursday morning. We still need to raise funds for the rest of his treatments. This is an ongoing thing for several days, if we have hopes of him pulling through!
